On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
