The Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Obtain the Position That Altered My Path

In the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my companion was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a big ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I told him that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I ought to seek a position with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but immediately explained to my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a city where opportunities abound – she responded: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his full name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in multiple respects. I would never have had the confidence or self-belief to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia led me to a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
